The text for the delivery of the series of lectures, titled “Women and Fiction,” and thus the essay, are deemed non-fiction. This extensive essay uses a fictional narrator and narrative to investigate women both as writers of and characters in fiction. This article is generally regarded as a feminist text and is noteworthy for its defence of both a literal and figurative space within a literary tradition dominated by women writers.
